What kind of sexual intercourse can cause pregnancy?

Sexual intercourse (sex) which can cause pregnancy is a direct body contact between a woman and a man by the female sexual organ (vagina) and the male sexual organ (penis).

The male sexual organ enters (penetrates) into the female sexual organ after which the sperm (semen) is ejaculated from the male sexual organ (penis) into the female sexual organ (vagina).

Other forms of body contact between a man and a woman like kissing, stroking, cuddling, oral or other forms of sex cannot cause pregnancy.

When can sexual intercourse cause pregnancy?

If during sexual intercourse (sex) no method of protection against unplanned pregnancy (contraception) was used or the method of protection against unplanned pregnancy (contraception) was used incorrectly or failed, pregnancy can occur.

Such a sexual intercourse is called unprotected.

Unprotected sexual intercourse is each sexual intercourse:

  • which did not stop on time, before the sperm/semen was ejaculated from the penis into the vagina
  • during which a condom was broken, slipped, fell or was not used at all
  • before which the pill for regular contraception was not used as usual or was not taken at all
  • during which an intrauterine device (so-called coil) was dislodged or pushed out during or before the intercourse
  • during which a vaginal diaphragm broke or changed its position or was not used in a correct way
